Tinubu renames University of Maiduguri after Buhari

President Bola Tinubu has renamed the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) in Borno State to Muhammadu Buhari University in honour of his late predecessor.

The President announced this during a special session of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) held in honour of the late former president at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The special session was attended by members of the federal cabinet, leadership of the National Assembly, the judiciary, and representatives of the late President’s family.

“Before we take the prayers in honour of Buhari’s memory, with this special session of the Federal Executive Council, can we adopt the naming of the University of Maiduguri with a new name — Muhammadu Buhari University, Maiduguri,” Tinubu said at the end of the session.

The President had in his earlier remark at the session described the late former President as “a good, decent and honourable man whose legacy would endure for generations.”

He said that although Buhari was not perfect, his unwavering commitment to the country, integrity and simplicity set him apart.

“President Buhari was not a perfect man, no leader is, but he was, in every sense of the word, a good man, a decent man, an honourable man.

“His record will be debated, as all legacies are, but the character he brought to public life, the moral force he carried, the incorruptible standard he represented, will not be forgotten.

“His was a life lived in full service to Nigeria, and in fidelity to God,” President Tinubu stated.

The President praised his predecessor’s simplicity, humility, and resistance to the trappings of power.

Buhari, who died in a London hospital last Sunday, was buried at his residence in Daura, Katsina State, on Tuesday.
