The remains Oba Dr. Sikiru Kayode Adetona, Ogbagba II, the Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, will be laid to rest today (Monday) according to Islamic rites.

The burial rites is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at his Igbeba residence, Ogbagba Court, in Ijebu Ode.

Oba Sikiru Adetona passed away on Sunday at the age of 91, few hours after the death of his friend, former President Muhammadu Buhari. Palace sources confirmed that the traditional ruler died peacefully following a brief illness.

Oba Adetona was born on May 10, 1934, and ascended the throne of Awujale of Ijenuland on April 2, 1960, making him one of Nigeria’s longest-reigning traditional rulers. Over a remarkable 65-year reign, he earned widespread respect in Ogun State and nationwide.

A close confidant of several national leaders, including Buhari, the Awujale maintained longstanding ties with Nigeria’s political elite — a relationship shaped by shared history and mutual respect.

Tributes have poured in from political figures, traditional rulers, and citizens alike. Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, hailed him as “a towering figure of integrity, courage, and service whose reign brought unprecedented progress to Ijebuland.”
